How to Select your Classes
Below are explanations of the academic options available during the summer and how courses are selected. During a month session you cannot mix and match classes between the University of Granada (UGR) and iNMSOL. However, if you are staying multiple sessions you may opt to take classes at iNMSOL one session and classes at the UGR another session. Note that in August classes are only offered at iNMSOL.
Both the UGR and iNMSOL have a Language Assessment:
iNMSOL: You will be send a link to complete an online language assessment approximately 4 weeks prior to the start of your program.
UGR: The language assessment is 2 parts: (1) written and (2) oral. You will first be sent a link from the UGR and once opened you have 24 hours to complete the assessment. Later, a faculty will coordinate with you a virtual oral assessment. Depending how start dates work from year to year in some cases the language assessment will be done in-person upon arrival to Granada.
SPANISH LANGUAGE: (at the University of Granada): June, July
The official name for this program at the University of Granada's (UGR) Center for Modern Languages (CLM) is CILE (Curso Intensivo de Lengua Española, or Intensive Spanish). If you choose this option you will select from the "Spanish Language Classes".
1 course session (1/2 month): Take any one Spanish course of your choosing. You should take whichever Spanish class is next in your sequence. If you last took Beginner II before starting the program then you will take Intermediate I.
1/2 month program (15 day or 18 day program): 50 contact hours (3 credits)
25 day program (July): 60 contact hours (4 credits)
2 course session (full month): Choose any two courses that are next in your required sequence. If you last took Beginner II before starting the program then you will take Intermediate I and Intermediate II.
Classes are M-F for 4 hours, typically 9 AM to 1 PM, for a total of 20 hours/week. That equates to 40 hours during a 1/2 month session and 80 hours during a full month session. Students from semester schools need additional hours to receive their 3 credits per course. As such, during the first 2 weeks of a June or July session students take 1 additional hour/day of "Practicas Comunicativas" (Communicative Practices) from 1:15 - 2:15 PM for a total of an additional 10 hours. In this way a student on 1/2 month program will earn a total of 50 contact hours (40 + 10) and a student on a full month program will earn a total of 90 contact hours (80 + 10). Students who choose the 3 week July program will not take the Practicas Comunicativas because earning 60 contact hours is enough hours for 4 credits.
SPANISH LANGUAGE, ELECTIVES & INTERNSHIPS: (at the University of Granada): June, July
The official name for this program at the University of Granada's (UGR) Center for Modern Languages (CLM) is CILYC (Curso de Lengua y Cultura, or Spanish Language and Culture).
You must stay the full month session to be able to take any of the Electives courses or to do an Internship course. These options are not available to anyone staying 15 to 25 day dates.
There are the possible configurations if you are in CILYC:
These are the possible configurations:
1 Spanish language class (45 contact hours) + 1 Elective (45 contact hours)
1 Spanish language class (45 contact hours) + 2 Electives (at 22.5 contact hours each)
2 Electives (45 contact hours each)
1 Elective (45 contact hours) + 2 Electives (at 22.5 contact hours each)
4 Electives (at 22.5 contact hours each)
If choosing one of the Internships these are treated just like a course. We usually have to work more closely with your schedule when doing these. They usually begin at 12:10 PM so any electives you choose must be during the 8:30 AM to 11:00 time slots.
It is also possible to only take a total of 45 contact hours (3 credits) during this session and receive a tuition discount. Please contact us to arrange this.
SPANISH LANGUAGE & ELECTIVES: (at iNMSOL): June, July, August
For any given session you may choose to take your classes at Instituto Mediterráneo Sol (iNMSOL), a Cervantes Institute.
For the full month program choose any two classes. Classes are taught in modules. For example, if choosing a Spanish class and an elective, for the first 2 weeks you would take Spanish (ex. Advanced I) and for the second 2 weeks you would take your Elective.
If you are staying the half session you may choose any one course.
